SCIENTIST WORK: Their Attitudes and Practices

I. INTRODUCTION
In this lesson we get values and insights that develop scientific attitudes using our heroes in the scientific world. We will also try to see how science laws, theories and principles develops as a process could one see through their role model of our scientist, which make one become a better science student.

II. OBJECTIVES:
1. Identify the different scientific attitudes.
2. Appreciate the contribution of some physicists in the development of modern physics.

III. LESSON PROPER
Although the steps in the Scientific Method (observation, identifying the problem, gathering data, formulation of hypothesis, experimentation , conclusion) can lead to the discovery of scientific fact ,these steps alone are not the key to most of the breakthrough and discoveries in science. the success has more to do with attitudes common to scientist. These attitudes are as follows:
1. Curiosity. A curious person asks questions as to the causes of some events if they are not yet
known.
2. Open-mindedness. An open-minded person is one who considers suggestions and accept
criticisms, shares ideas with other, considers several possibilities when investigating problem, and accepts the positive and negative results of his/her investigation.
3. Questioning Attitudes. A person with a questioning attitude asks questions like who, where,
why, when, and how; looks for inconsistencies in statements and conclusion, makes decision after she/he has collected all important facts, challenges the validity or unsupported statements; and
distinguishes between truth and fiction.
4. Respect for evidence. A person who has respect for evidence checks the consistency or
observations; uses measuring devices in presenting ideas presented by others, and condsider available data before drawing a conclusion.
5. Believing in cause and effect relationship. Believes that for every effect, there is a corresponding cause and accepts a statement as a fact only if suported by evidence.
6. Honesty. Reports the data truthfully; gives comments as situations demand, and
acknowledges the work done by the others.
7. Humility. A person demonstrates this attitudes when he/she shows awareness of his/her
shortcomings indicate willingness to ask help from someone who can assist
him/her, and considers the feeling of others when accomplishing certain tasks.
8. Patience and determination. Carriers our an investigation through pressed for time, and
spite of several failures, remain undaunted even in the face of criticisms.
9. Resourcefulness and creativity. Can make optimum use of apparatus or equipment suggests
substitutes for materials that are not available in school or in the community.
10. Intellectual responsibility. Performs assigned tasks dutifully, shows willingness to do work
if necessary, and accept failures if any are made during an investigation.

After going through the Scientific Attitudes, check yourselves whether you manifest above traits or not, Why? Explain your reason.
